With gas prices climbing daily, many commuters are looking for a more economic (and ecologically responsible) way to travel. Treehugger reports that the City of Montreal has launched one possible solution: the Public Bike System.

This project looks worth watching... and maybe copying elsewhere. A combination of technologies to track usage and location, charge for the service, etc. I like it.

Montreal IIRC already has a pretty decent system of bikeable thoroughfares and lots of tie-ups downtown, though I can't help to think that this will be a great solution for all but the 48 weeks of winter they have up there every year. And during those 48 weeks, just try taking your bike on the less-than-accessible Metro or bus, especially during peak hours.

its true, hard to bike thru blizzards and new snow.
But nevertheless i would really like to see this plan get carried out for the 3 months that it doesn't snow here in montreal.
very affordable, easy to use, and positively communal.

Most of downtown Montreal is linked by the La Ville Souterraine (the underground city), a complex of beautiful tunnels lined with shops, connecting major buildings, and inter-connected with the subway system. During the winter months, you can avoid those excruciatingly cold winds and snow.
When I lived and worked in Montreal in the early 80s, the city was already bike friendly. There were bike paths going all along the St. Lawrence, and you could take you bike onto buses and subway cars.
This Public Bike System doesn't surprise me coming from one of the most enlightened cities in N America.
Plus there are the local trains and national one. For example, you can go to Quebec City (which I just wrote about) and be back in the same day.

Note that American cities like Albuquerque and Chicago already have long-term biking initiatives.

This is a very good idea, but it is also a great tracking device. The paranoia in me worries that there is no way to participate anonymously.
